A Work in Progress

“Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused.” – An old Irish proverb (I think!)

If you happen to be in the vicinity next weekend, it’ll be a great concert. We’re singing quite a variety, from Shakespeare with harp to the Beatles and Billy Joel. Something for every hopeless romantic.  :)

And before I forget again, I have music from the Christmas concert, for anyone interested in the usual offer. Please note that I am not assuming that anyone wants a copy, so even if you’ve gotten one before, tell me if you want a new one. Also, if anyone’s interested one of my favorite concerts was a version of the Latin Mass (I forget which, but it’s gorgeous), which would be rather appropriate this time of year. Same deal applies.

Fresh Choral Tunes

Posted by julie on October 25, 2007

For those who enjoyed this, I’m putting out the same offer for the October concert just past. The music this time is all in English, is all sacred, and has all been performed for British royalty at some point or other. Quite a good concert, actually.

Anyway, same procedure as before.

UPDATE – I’m moving this post up, for those who may have missed it yesterday.

Backstage Pass

Yesterday, I spent the afternoon helping at the Mesa Public Schools Secondary Choral Festival, which was sponsored by the Chorale. Every Junior High and High School Choir in our district (which came to about 800 kids) came to the Mesa Arts Center to perform, culminating in a piece they all sang together at the end of the evening, which was amazing (the music was nice; what was amazing was how great it sounded when all 800 kids were singing at once. The soft parts were soft, but the loud parts were like a wall of sound; since we were standing up on stage at that point, it was all aimed right at us).

The Festival took place at the Mesa Arts Center, which meant that once again I had a chance to wander around behind the scenes. Of course, since all the visual stuff takes place in the theater, backstage tends to be rather Spartan, but I did get a few good pictures to share.

Concert Weekend

Posted by julie on October 6, 2007

Today and tomorrow are the first concerts of the season for us (we stick to school years). Our new CD also debuts this weekend, so it was time to make a new display for CD sales.

I’d love to take credit for the photos, but they’re actually the work of Bob Rice, whose wife is in the Chorale (and who also sings with us, from time to time). Bob has traveled with the group on all of the tours of Europe they’ve taken over the years (I think). All I did here was arrange the pictures in a nice 20×20 display.

Update: In the interests of accuracy, I’d like to note that the images used in this display are actually from several people, and have also been arranged by various graphic designers.

October Prep

 oct-07-flyer.jpg

In case you’ve been wondering why I’ve been so quiet lately, I’ve been busy working on preparations for the October concert. If anyone had told me, a few years back, that I’d be in charge of PR for anything, I’d have looked them dead in the eye and with 100% certainty said they were nuts, given that I’ve made a lifelong practice of trying to draw as little attention to myself as possible, most of the time. Yet here I am, and for the most part I seem to be doing alright. Go figure.

Monday’s Project

Posted by julie on June 26, 2007

I spent yesterday polishing up the new season brochure for the Sonoran Desert Chorale. Thanks again to Mizze, for suggesting I use that photo – I think (and more importantly, they think) it worked out well.

I’m still bemused by all of this; a little over a year ago, I volunteered to assist the Board. This year, though I had no prior experience, I’m the Secretary, Publications & PR Coordinator, and Graphic Designer. I’m doing all right, though, and it’s good to be a useful part of something that is greater than myself.

Hot Off the Presses

Posted by julie on May 31, 2007

I’m preparing to send out copies of the May 6th concert to friends and family. The music this time is 2/3 classic Church music, which will be sung in actual church services while the Chorale tours in Italy in the next couple of weeks. The other 1/3 is American spirituals. This is a live recording, warts and all; it has moments of sheer delight (especially Miserere mei, Deus by Gregorio Allegri :) . If you’d like to be added to the mailing list for this one, send me an email at juliecork -at- prodigy -dot- net.
