A Work in Progress

“Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused.” – An old Irish proverb (I think!)

The petals of peach and nectarine blossoms, I’ve discovered, seem designed to let in the light like stained glass.

If the sun ever comes out again, I’m going to try to figure out how best to use it with the Eyeclops. With any luck, the available colors will get more interesting…

Jewelled Crown

The strain of new growth

sends sweat rolling off the brow

tree’s blood and water

I noticed this yesterday while taking photos of the annual blooming of the peach tree. Those aren’t water drops, they’re either sap or nectar (syrupy and yes, sweet; it’s a peach tree, I didn’t figure it would poison me). On another shoot, ants were harvesting the fluid. I wonder if it’s a symbiotic thing- feed the ants yourself, and they won’t bring in the aphids to suck you dry and milk their nectar? Or could it even be a lensing effect to magnify the sun while they’re still small? Anyway, it’s something I’ve never noticed before, probably because the new leaves grow so fast, and I don’t think they extrude this stuff for very long.

painful to delicate skin;

lovely color, though.

Fruiting

In the midst of death,
we are in life, if only
we know where to look

* I’ve finally figured it out – the tree with the light pink blooms is a nectarine tree; the one with the fuschia blooms is a peach. Both have a promising start this year, and if I can properly cultivate them I might actually have some edible fruits :) Woohoo!

Bursting with Excitement

speak.jpg
Yesterday, I spent the afternoon at a state senate appropriations meeting (details here and here). I had no plans to speak, which was just as well since, by the time they got to our bill (2 1/2 hours into the session), they weren’t really listening much anyway. Also, there’s nothing I could have said that would have added to the discussion. It was interesting, though, to see first hand how these things work. If that was my day job, I do believe I’d want to shoot myself in short order; I’m amazed that there are people who actually want to do it.

Anyway, the long session meant that when I left yesterday morning, the first peach bloom looked like this:

When I returned, I was greeted by this:

And this morning, a better view:
