A Work in Progress

“Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused.” – An old Irish proverb (I think!)

The ring on my finger seems extra-special to me; not just because it’s mine, but because of the love it represents. On Valentine’s day of ‘99, my then-boyfriend of 5 1/2 years took me out to dinner. I suspected he might ask, but I wasn’t certain. After dinner, when we got in the car, he nervously turned to me, took my hand, and pulled the ring out of his pocket. I was stunned – I didn’t know when or where he had gotten it, since as a law student he hadn’t had time (nor the money, I thought) to buy such a beautiful ring. I’d have been delighted with a simple band. This ring, he explained, had belonged to his mother. It was his inheritance from her, to be passed on to someone worthy of sharing her son’s life for better or worse. Slipping it on my finger that first time, I became aware of what a great honor and responsibility it was to carry this gift for the rest of my life; I try hard to be worthy of it.
