A Work in Progress

“Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused.” – An old Irish proverb (I think!)

“Getting to Know You”

The Rules:

1. The rules of the game get posted at the beginning.
2. Each player answers the questions about themselves.
3. At the end of the post, the player then tags 5 or more people and posts their names, then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment, letting them know they’ve been tagged and asking them to read your blog.
4. Let the person who tagged you know when you’ve posted your answers.
5. You don’t have to randomly italic or bold answers, as Blogger has done for me.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. What was I doing 10 years ago?
Ten years ago I was a student at Ohio State University (Lima Branch), majoring in thinking of things to do until I could go to a college that offered more of a degree program than “go to Columbus and get a real major.” Hence my first college-level drawing class, taught by Eddie Valentine, in which he noted that I seemed to have the “art bug.” And thus, a painter was born.
2. What are 5 Things on my To-Do List for today?
1. Do a blog post
2. Go to final Choir performance of the season
3. Procure dinner, one way or another
4. Research text to include in the painting
5. Have a nice, relaxing evening with DH
3. Snacks I Enjoy:
A shorter list would probably be “Snacks I Hate,” which would include things like pork rinds.
4. Things I would do if I were a Billionaire:
1. Obviously, I’d pay off all my debts
2. Buy a nice but reasonably modest house in the Phoenix area
3. Buy/ build a nice place with some acreage somewhere more remote
4. Get a yacht, take my brother (and other family, but he’s the one who really wants to do this) sailing for a year or so
5. Donate to charity, set up a trust fund or two
6. Otherwise, maybe not much different from how I live now
5. Three Of My Bad Habits:
Only three?
1. I procrastinate. A lot.
2. I tend to be anti-social
3. I don’t give nearly enough attention to my dogs. Their eternally dejected expressions haunt my afternoons… but not enough for me to be more fun.
6. 5 Places I have Lived:
1. Washington State
2. Suffolk, England
3. Marlboro, Vermont
4. Ohio, west and east
5. Phoenix area, Arizona
7. Jobs I Have Had:
1. Babysitter
2. Five (hellish) days for the Piggly Wiggly french fry stand at the King County Fair
3. Dishwasher
4. Sandwich Artist
5. Frozen yogurt server
8. 5 People I Want To Know More About: I Am Tagging:
If you’re reading here and you have a blog, of course I’d love to know more about you. If you want to play, too, consider yourself tagged!
Meme’d Again
Posted by julie on September 30, 2007
The delightful Bee, the boat builder over at Bumble, has tagged me with a pair of memes. I’m starting to realize they’re rather like viruses; I’ve seen these two at several of my favorite haunts lately, so I suppose it was only a matter of time before I came down with them :) While I often enjoy doing them, I don’t like to tag people much. Instead, if you’re on my sidebar and you haven’t done either of these, and you would like to, then consider yourself tagged (how’s that for lazy?).
The first is the middle name meme, in which you take the letters of your middle name and use them to come up with words to describe yourself. Mine is comparatively long (I’ve noticed many with this one have rather short middle names). I’ll play along, but the letters are in random order…
Truthful – I try very hard to be, as much as humanly possible, anyway. I swear!
Eccentric – I’m fairly certain this describes me, though I don’t know if it really counts if you actually label yourself this way.
Artistic – I’m getting more comfortable with this one; when I graduated from college, I felt like an artistic fraud, but these days I think the appellation fits a little better. I don’t know if I feel comfortable actually calling myself an artist yet – in my mind, that’s someone who has far more skill, talent, and drive than I do, but artistic to me means having at least some humble tendencies in that direction, even if skills need honing.
Nerdy – well, a little anyway; I spend an inordinate amount of time playing games of all kinds, reading sci-fi stories and learning about science and technology. I don’t have an encyclopedic knowledge of any of these things (my brain doesn’t work that way), but generally enough to be comfortable with those who do.
Not noisy – usually, anyway. I once startled a guy in college so much that he actually fell over. He was walking down a hall ahead of me, and I realized as I walked into the hall that he didn’t hear me, and didn’t know I was coming up behind him. To avoid startling him, I said “Hi” a couple of times. He still didn’t hear me, and when he turned a corner he saw me out of the corner of his eye. He jumped about three feet into the air and fell over backwards. I felt bad, but I can’t help laughing now…
Embarrassed easily – these days, my social skills are good enough that I usually don’t worry about making an ass of myself around others. Even so, if I’m carrying on a conversation where I’m doing most of the talking (to people I don’t know very well), my face turns a rather alarming shade of red. I generally prefer to just sit in the back and not say anything, in real life anyway.
Tenacious – I’m usually fairly easygoing, but when it seems to matter (“seems” being the operative word – sometimes, in hindsight, my sticking points are rather foolish) I can be downright stubborn. Mostly, I think, that’s been a good thing.
The second meme is a series of questions:
1. If you could have superpowers, what would they be? There is no obligation to be unselfish, save the world etc.
If I could have a superpower, I think I would want the ability to see people for who they really are.
2. Stranded on a desert island with a CD player and 10 CDs, what would they be?
Together Alone by Crowded House
Eight random mixes (using as much disk space as possible) from my iTunes library (currently 3700 songs, 1100 of which are on my “Favorites” list)
A mix of the best songs sung by my choir
Of course, unless there are a ton of batteries or some kind of solar generator for the CD player, it won’t really matter for long….
3. If you were a smell, what would you be?
Something light and cinnamony, with an undercurrent of jalapeno.
4. If you were a bird, what kind would you like to be?
An owl
5. If you were a bird, whose head would you poo on?
I honestly don’t know; if I were a bird, I don’t think my poo would matter to me once it was no longer in my body. I don’t generally fantasize about crapping on anyone, so I don’t have a good answer.
6. Are there any foods your body craves?
Oh, the usuals – coffee, chocolate, occasionally a beer after a day of hot, sweaty labor.
7. Favourite time of year?
All but summer, here in the desert. The rest of the year, the weather’s just about perfect.
8. Favourite time of day?
Bedtime – always the Best Part of the Day
9. If a change is as good as a rest, which would you choose?
That all depends on the change and on the rest; both are an important aspect of living, and it is the changes and rests that mark the tempo of one’s own life symphony.
10. If you could invite five people living or dead, past or present to a dinner party, who would they be?
Only five? You all know who you are, I think. I don’t know about inviting famous people and dead people – I’d rather break bread with those close to my heart.
Well, that’s it. If you want to play, too, coonsider yourself tagged!
