Before I was born
you were told to abort me;
“You might die,” Doc said.
You said no to him
and to your mother, who was
angry you weren’t wed.
When I was born and
you finally woke from the
anesthesia,
“She might be a bit slow,”
Doc said; “she’s cute but her head
is proportional
to the rest of her.”
You took me home and were glad
you had me, girl two.
To most people you
are just such a nice lady,
but I know how strong
And fierce you can be.
For our sakes, you fought all threats
whatever they were
Collapsing lungs,
malicious teachers and kids
all the hazards, you
guided us through and
still do sometimes, when we find
we’ve made the wrong choice.
I know when my turn
comes to be a mother, I’ll
be okay because
I was so lucky
that I had you as my Mom.
Happy Mother’s Day.
Love Julie
