A Work in Progress

“Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused.” – An old Irish proverb (I think!)

Uninvited Guest

Today we had our annual in-house scorpion, so we should be good for another year or so. This one was on the living room carpet, about to be nosed by a pooch. DH spotted it before she could be stung.

Our first scorpion experience was in the summer of ‘02, during a big electrical storm. We had gone upstairs and turned off the lights to get a better view of the lightning crashing all around the house. During one bright blast, DH noticed an odd spot on the wall in front of him. Curious, he reached out with his left finger to poke at it, realizing too late what it was.

“Yaargh!”

“What?! What happened?” I was very startled, and thought at first that maybe he had been shocked by a near burst of lightning or something. He turned on the lights, and sure enough there on the wall was one of these beasties.

“It stung me. What should we do?”

We looked at each other, looked at his finger and shrugged. Neither of us had ever encountered a scorpion. We called Poison Control, just to be on the safe side.

“No need to worry, unless you have an allergic reaction.  You might feel a lot of pain through your body, though.”

Fortunately, it wasn’t too bad for him, about like a bee sting really. Still, not an experience anyone wants to repeat. Since then, we’ve seen about one per year in the house, usually in the summer.
