Friday Portrait

It’s been a while, but I went back today. To avoid excessive chemical exposure, I’m sticking with drawing for now. I think it was a good start, after a six month absence.

Today’s sitter was Maria. She had already been sitting for an hour and a half by the time I got there, hence the lack of smile. It’s hard to look cheerful for that long.

I only did two sketches today. This one’s the warm up.

And the final.

I was glad to see Mary Alice still going strong. She’s in her 90s, I think.

  1. What a lovely start! A fine subject always helps, too.

    This makes me smile.

    See? :o)

What a sketch of dignity. I see an expression softened from the photo; more presence, less weariness. Great to see the return to portrait work.

Thanks, ladies. I really appreciate the feedback. To be honest, I was tempted to skip it today but the responses last week when I said I’d be going back helped give me that extra nudge. And I’m glad I went – it’s a good group of people, and they were happy to see me. You can’t help but feel good to have a room erupt in a chorus of welcome after a long absence 🙂

🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 Hi Five! A little encouragement is such a BIG thing. You and your artwork are growing and it is good!

To me, it looks like your abilities “grew” in your down time. You must have been sketching internally even while doing other things. And your picture shows character in her face that is not obvious in the photo.

What a wonderful talent you have. Of course you have an excellent eye for framing a subject which is brought out in your photography. But to be able to draw so well too… I’m green with envy. I went back and looked at some of your older posts with the portraits yesterday… ah to have such ability. I’m so happy to see you working with your gift. From those of us who have trouble drawing stick men, I cheer.

  7. I agree, the ‘time off’ made you even better.

It’s good to see that you are back to your group. I always loved these entries and hope that you are enjoying yourself. Sounds like you were missed!

The break’s certainly done you no harm.

How wonderful to think we could still be doing creative things into our nineties…
