Today’s sitter was Heather from Yorkshire. She looked pensive when I first arrived, possibly because posing for artists was not how she had imagined spending her morning. I don’t know if we had a no-show today, or if there just wasn’t anyone scheduled, but we were fortunate that she was willing to sit for us on the spur of the moment.
She turned out to be quite the character.
“I’ve lived all over,” she said, “I’ve traveled the world. My favorite place was Australia. Australia is the place to go for a young person like you; you should go. But not for me.”
She went on to recount her days spent in the outback, back in the 60’s when supplies were shipped to their town once per year, in a big caravan pulled by tractors. It took two weeks to go each direction, with eight trailers hitched to a tractor moving at about 5 mph. They’d camp every night near billabongs, and of course had to watch for snakes and other creepy crawlies. It was a hard life, but you can see how much she loved it.
“I’ve been all the way ’round and straight through the middle!”
